Problem

At a railway yard in North Carolina, workers were struggling with a dirty and dangerous job – cleaning up materials that spilled from railway cars as they passed in and out of the yard. To get the task done, an operator spent hours walking in front of a 135-ton mobile cleaning machine, controlling two large trenching scoops (used for picking up rubbish) through a short cable connected to the machine. The dust and debris that was thrown up by the moving equipment was substantial, and the pedestrian operator had no protection from the contaminants or flying fragments. In fact, if the cable became tangled for any reason, the operator could even be run over by the enormous vehicle. The rail-yard workers needed a safer, more effective method of control.

Most importantly, he was able to do it while standing beside, or well ahead of the cleaning machine at a distance of a hundred feet or more. In fact, the solution worked so well, the rail-yard purchased more wireless remotes to solve other safety issues on site.
